Owner's Take On "Why did I buy it in the first place?"-My
very discerning teenaged daughters and I bought 2272 Wilson
because of the light and the balconies. We also liked the
aesthetic, and felt it was a good compromise between the
faux Tudor details, popular in the era in which it was
built, and a more modern and light approach. We loved the
details over the hallway archway, and in the dining room,
and the silver painted radiators, which are now back in
fashion and are healthier than electric side board heating.
The honey locust tree out front provided a beautiful
feathery shade over the façade, and cooled the house in
summer. There is a good cross breeze if one opens the front
and back balcony doors, and lots of sun in back for sun
loving plants while the front is better for shade plants.
What made us fall in love?-We loved the feeling of being up
on the top deck and loved the light which shines in at all
times of the year. We also liked the wall paper which
struck as being kind of French and gracious, and the
hardwood floors. We liked the art deco fireplace in the
front room and the painted woodwork in the dining room
which looks a bit like the sets of Bridgerton. The windows
and skylights mean there is lots of light and front windows
look right into the urban canopy of the stately trees, the
locusts and maples that line Wilson, and make it a lovely
street.
Best nearby restaurants and attractions? -The streets are
tree lined and there is a friendly vibe to the area. People
smile and say hi and there are events like PorchFest and
other community activities that maintian a sort of social
cohesion. Croissant Monkland has the best croissants in the
city, Bombay Mahal is good for a cheap and flavourful
Indian meal, Pasta Casareccia is great for all things
Italian made in house, Café Kokkino is fun and good and the
owner is a real character, there is Esposito, a grocery
store with an Italian character at the corner as well as a
Dollar Store and several banks nearby, as well as a dry
cleaner and hair salons, a shoe repair shop, and stores for
pet owners. There are vets and dentists within easy reach.
Girouard Park is a neighbourhood hub of activity and
greenery just a few short blocks away. There are lots of
other bars and restos to go to, too, as well as a growing
number of small businesses and eateries on Sherbrooke and
on Monkland, which is an easy walk away. Sherbrooke is a
real high street with all amenities in walking distance.
Lower NDG is a real neighbourhood where people are
acquainted with each other but not obtrusive. There are
families with small children and older people from all
kinds of backgrounds living peacefully together. The
neighbourhood is on an upward turn and the underdeveloped
areas nearby are being developed, such that Lower NDG is
becoming trendy.
